When the students talk to a teacher after class and the gallery is accidently brought up the conversation changes.

Tommy begins to draw fantastic animals, hoping that these pieces will make up for the fact that he never got artwork into the Gallery when he was a Hailsham student. It also shows how much this sense of this tranquility depends on the guardians, who shield the students from a full understanding of their role in the outside world. Kathy remembers the two years in the cottages with fondness. Pg 56 Kathy moves to an incident three years later. Again we see secrecy and some element of deception. A few months after Tommy and Ruth get together, the students graduate from Hailsham and go to live at the Cottage, a more relaxed holding facility where the students are free to drive and otherwise act as they wish.
